Flathub is an app store and build service for Linux that aims to be the place to get and distribute apps for Linux. It is powered by Flatpak, which allows Flathub apps to run on almost any Linux distribution. Flathub offers a growing collection of Flatpak applications that can be easily installed on any Linux distribution. It is an independent project developed by a group of volunteers. Flatpak is the tool used to install applications, and Flathub is a repository that distributes the applications to Flatpak users. Flathub is one of many online repositories (called “remotes” in Flatpak) that can be queried for software to download and install in Flatpak. As with all software, users should be vigilant when using non-free software. Flatpak limits access to system resources, but it cannot cover every case where software may try to carry out unethical activities (phishing and so on, for example). Flathub may offer paid-for software, and it is being proposed as an app store for Linux by the GNOME and KDE organizations. Snaps are considered easier to maintain/build compared to Flatpak packages, but with Flathub as Flatpak's store, maintainers receive help from various developers to test and improve the Flatpaks.
