Private credit is non-bank lending—also called direct lending or private lending—where debt is privately negotiated and not issued or traded on public markets. The market has expanded as traditional banks have pulled back, with asset managers supplying capital to mostly middle‑market and private‑equity‑owned companies through senior secured loans, unitranche facilities, mezzanine and specialty financings. It is viewed as a complement to traditional fixed income, often offering higher yields and bespoke covenants or collateral, but it is illiquid, less transparent and requires active underwriting. Historically private credit has sometimes delivered incremental income and resilience relative to public high‑yield and leveraged loan indices, yet it carries credit, origination and liquidity risks and suits investors with longer horizons and strong due diligence. Large alternative-asset managers and publicly traded platforms are now major providers and distributors of private credit, with firms such as Ares Management, Apollo, Blackstone, KKR and Blue Owl operating sizeable direct‑lending and credit businesses.
